The University of Zaragoza is building a primary production data centre on its Campus San Francisco, part of a €1.5 million two-site infrastructure project funded by the Government of Aragon, targeting operational readiness in 2027.
The University of Zaragoza is undertaking a €1.5 million ($1.7 million) digital infrastructure project to construct two new data centres across its campuses in Zaragoza, Spain. The primary facility, located at Campus San Francisco in the city centre, will serve as the main production data centre, while a secondary disaster recovery site is planned for the Río Ebro Campus, providing geographic redundancy and service continuity across distributed sites.
Funded in full by the Government of Aragon under a contract signed with the university, the project aims to replace and significantly expand the institution's existing IT infrastructure. The new facilities will increase rack density, accommodate larger volumes of compute and storage equipment, and improve the operational resilience of the university's critical digital systems—including student services, research platforms, and administrative applications. Both facilities are scheduled to become operational in 2027.
The project reflects a broader trend across European universities to modernise and consolidate on-premises data infrastructure as institutional demand for computational resources grows, driven by expanding research programmes, AI-assisted learning platforms, and the increasing digitisation of academic services. The distributed architecture across two campuses ensures that the University of Zaragoza maintains high availability and disaster recovery capability for its key workloads.
