Project Tallmadge is an 87-acre, 180MW data center campus being developed by Takanock on an industrially zoned site in Strasburg, Virginia, located near Interstate 81's Exit 296 in Shenandoah County. The land parcel's industrial zoning classification means the data center use is 'by-right,' simplifying the permitting pathway for this large-scale facility. Additional permitting is scheduled for completion by Q3 2027, with construction commencing in the same quarter.
The campus will be powered entirely by on-site generation—specifically 400MW of front-of-the-meter natural gas turbines—providing firm, dispatchable power independent of grid constraints. This behind-the-meter approach is central to Takanock's strategy of addressing power shortages in core data center markets by delivering flexible, large-scale on-site generation. The facility will use closed-loop cooling throughout, minimising water consumption and environmental impact.
Takanock was founded in 2023 by Kenneth Davies, formerly of Google Energy and Microsoft's global renewable strategy team, and is backed by DigitalBridge. The company currently has four active sites across three US states, with 2.8GW of IT capacity and 5.3GW of generation capacity in its development pipeline. Project Tallmadge represents Takanock's entry into Northern Virginia's data center corridor, a region recognised globally as one of the highest-density digital infrastructure markets in the world.
