MERLIN Edged Lisbon Campus - Vila Franca de Xira, Portugal

The MERLIN Edged Lisbon Campus is a major greenfield data centre development in the Parque das Nações business district of Vila Franca de Xira, just north of Lisbon, Portugal, jointly developed by Merlin Properties and Edged. Groundbreaking on the 180MW campus was announced in 2025, with construction underway in phases, the first of five planned facilities expected to come online in 2027. Merlin and Edged are working to bring additional power to the site with the potential to expand capacity up to 300MW at full development, making it one of Portugal's largest data centre investments. Portugal's combination of superb submarine cable connectivity – with 10 intercontinental cables landing or transiting near Lisbon – abundant renewable energy, a skilled workforce, investor-friendly regulatory environment, and competitive operating costs makes the Lisbon market increasingly attractive for hyperscale and wholesale data centre customers. The Vila Franca de Xira location within the Parque das Nações corridor gives the campus access to Lisbon's metropolitan connectivity infrastructure and logistics networks, while the established technology business park environment provides the operational framework for large-scale campus development. Edged founder Jakob Carnemark has described the Lisbon campus as a key part of Edged's mission to create "data centers for positive impact," aligned with Portugal's rapidly growing digital economy and its ambitions to leverage its geographic position as a bridge between Europe, the Americas, and Africa through its exceptional submarine cable infrastructure. The campus uses Edged's waterless ThermalWorks cooling technology and is designed to achieve a PUE of 1.15, consistent with the company's net-zero digital infrastructure commitments across its European and US portfolio.
