Plans have been filed with the New South Wales government to develop a major 540MW data centre on Hart Road in Loxford, located on the former Hydro Aluminium Kurri Kurri Smelter site in the Hunter Region of NSW. The applicant is project management firm ADW Johnson Pty Ltd, and the facility is positioned adjacent to Snowy Hydro's 660MW Kurri Kurri natural gas power station.
The proposed development spans 21 hectares on a comprehensively remediated former industrial site, approximately 167 kilometres north of Sydney and 37 kilometres from Newcastle. Plans call for a large two-storey facility with two substations connecting to the existing 132 kV AusGrid transmission line, providing direct access to high-capacity grid infrastructure.
The Kurri Kurri aluminium smelter, which opened around 1969 and ceased production in 2012, underwent substantial remediation work and is now largely vacant. This development represents a significant reinvestment in the Hunter Region, delivering critical digital infrastructure on a brownfield site while leveraging existing high-capacity power connections and proximity to major renewable energy sources.
