Italy's State Mint (Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato) data center in Rome — 1.5MW, 200 racks, Italy's largest prefabricated data center, earthquake-proof and built in 5 weeks for €28 million.
Italy's State Mint and national print authority, the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, commissioned a pioneering prefabricated data center in Rome, delivered by Sirti Digital Solutions in just five weeks through a joint venture between air conditioning specialist HiRef and telco equipment supplier Smitt. At a cost of €28 million ($32.5 million), the facility became the largest prefabricated data center in Italy upon its completion in 2026.
The 1,200-square-metre facility houses 200 racks with a total IT capacity of 1.5MW, designed with 2N redundant architecture and a target PUE of 1.25 or better. The data center was constructed using 44 prefabricated modules assembled on site, built entirely from 100% recyclable materials with no concrete used. It is designed to be earthquake-proof through the integration of seismic isolation technology developed with the Polytechnic University of Milan, and can withstand winds exceeding 200 km/h.
The Italian government will use the data center to run IO, a widely used public services application enabling Italian citizens to manage official documents and government communications. Sirti Digital Solutions was also awarded a five-year operation and maintenance contract for the facility.
