Google broke ground in June 2026 on its first owned and operated data center in Sweden, located in the town of Horndal in Dalarna County. The facility marks a significant step in Google's European infrastructure expansion, bringing hyperscale cloud capacity directly to the Nordic region and strengthening the company's commitment to low-latency, locally hosted cloud services for Swedish and broader European customers.
Horndal's location in central Sweden offers several advantages for data center development, including access to Sweden's predominantly renewable electricity grid — one of the cleanest in Europe — as well as a cool climate well suited to energy-efficient cooling. The region has established itself as an increasingly attractive data center destination, benefiting from high-voltage transmission infrastructure and proximity to the Nordic fibre backbone.
The Horndal facility will serve Google's growing European cloud customer base, supporting Google Cloud Platform services, AI workloads, and enterprise applications. Sweden's stable regulatory environment, strong renewable energy credentials, and skilled technical workforce make it a strategically important market for Google's long-term infrastructure investment.
