Firmus Long Reach Data Centre (GEE01)
Firmus is developing a 288MW AI factory in George Town, Tasmania, on the former Gunns Pulp Mill site, using direct-to-chip liquid cooling for AI workloads.
Firmus Technologies is developing a 288MW AI factory at Lot 1 East Tamar Highway, Long Reach, in George Town, Tasmania. Known as Project GEE01 and listed as 'Project Southgate' on the company's website, the facility is being developed on the former Gunns Pulp Mill site — a large industrial platform that already has three 220kV high-voltage power lines operated by TasNetworks running through it. A development application has been filed with the George Town council, and the facility will use direct-to-chip liquid cooling to manage the extreme heat generated by next-generation GPU clusters.
The Long Reach site is one of several AI factory campuses Firmus is pursuing in Tasmania as part of its long-term Project Southgate initiative, which targets 1.6GW of sovereign AI compute capacity across the island by 2028. Tasmania's hydroelectric power grid, cool climate, and abundant land availability make it one of the most cost-effective locations globally for large-scale AI data centre development.
Backed by Nvidia, Firmus specialises in immersion and direct-to-chip liquid-cooled AI infrastructure through its proprietary HyperCube platform. The company operates a smaller existing facility in Tasmania and is also developing a 90MW data centre in Launceston (scalable to 400MW). If approved, GEE01 would become one of the largest data centre projects ever undertaken in Australia, reinforcing Tasmania's emerging position as a global hub for sovereign AI compute.
