Aurinkokarhu is developing a 60MW data center facility in Närpiö (Närpes), a town in the Ostrobothnia region of western Finland. The Finnish renewable energy developer has secured a preliminary land agreement for 18 hectares with private landowners and the City of Närpiö, marking a significant step toward establishing large-scale digital infrastructure in this emerging Nordic market.
The facility is designed with sustainability at its core, with a letter of intent signed with Närpes Fjärrvärme (Närpiön District Heating) to channel waste heat from the server halls directly into the local district heating network. This circular energy approach means the data center's thermal output will supply the majority of the district's heating requirements, potentially eliminating the need for additional electric boiler capacity.
Founded in 2020, Aurinkokarhu brings a strong renewable energy background to the project, claiming a pipeline of 800MW of solar capacity and 3.2GWh of battery storage across Finland. The Närpiö facility is part of the company's reported 160MW data center development roadmap. Discussions are underway with potential investors and anchor tenants, with the campus targeting HPC and AI workloads requiring reliable, clean-energy-powered compute infrastructure.
