In less than a month, the Trump administration plans to unveil a comprehensive federal AI initiative previously seen on a GitHub repository but now removed from public view.

The General Services Administration (GSA) is collaborating with its Technology Transformation Services to develop an ‘ai.gov’ portal. This site aims to centralize AI integration across government agencies, according to the evaporated GitHub repository that was archived for safety. Thomas Shedd, leading the charge and closely affiliated with Elon Musk, originally aimed for the GSA to operate akin to a tech startup, promoting a government-wide AI-centric approach to automation.

Plans included an ‘AI.gov’ launch on July 4, although details remain scant after the disappearance of a staging link on GitHub. This initiative anticipates including an AI chatbot, a comprehensive API connecting various models by tech giants, and ‘CONSOLE,’ a tool designed to assess AI implementation across agencies. Backup archives reveal the possibility of AI.gov utilizing FedRAMP-certified models via Amazon’s Bedrock, although some firms listed remain uncertified.

Concerns persist about AI’s rapid adoption, with experts cautioning that this ambitious strategy could pose security risks involving sensitive data. Despite these alarms, the administration moves towards deregulating state-level AI constraints while automating government roles. After reaching out for feedback from involved parties, official responses remain sparse while the repository was relegated to an archive status where interested professionals can still access it.
