Reacting to surging AI demand, Micron is phasing out its Crucial consumer line to bolster its enterprise chip offerings. The American chipmaker announced it would stop selling Crucial products by February 2026, continuing support beyond that. Sumit Sadana, Micron’s Executive VP, stated that this strategic move aims to strengthen their supply chain for enterprise memory products, crucial for data centers as AI applications explode.
While Crucial may fade from shelves, Micron still supplies memory for commercial sectors. This shift aligns with market trends where consumer systems typically use up to 256 GB of memory, far less than AI servers like Nvidia’s HGX B300, which handle over 4 TB. As AI’s appetite grows, DRAM prices are projected to escalate, driven by companies like Micron reallocating production capacity.
NAND flash memory prices are soaring too, with reported increases up to 60% across different segments due to the same AI demand driving up DRAM costs. The narrowing consumer options highlight a pressing global memory shortage affecting both DRAM and NAND markets.
