Meta, a dominating force in social networking, has announced four groundbreaking custom AI chips, created alongside Broadcom, to power its artificial intelligence services.
These chips, part of the Meta Training Inference Accelerator (MTIA) series, include the MTIA 300, 400, 450, and 500. The MTIA 300, geared towards ranking and recommendation tasks, is already in production. The MTIA 400 supports generative AI models and is on the verge of mass deployment. The MTIA 450, equipped for GenAI inference, promises performance surpassing existing commercial chips, with early 2027 mass deployment planned. The MTIA 500 ramps up efficiency with increased bandwidth and is set for 2027 deployment as well.
While these technological advancements bolster Meta’s infrastructure, the company’s Oversight Board highlights ongoing challenges in detecting AI-generated content, stressing a need for improved fact-checking systems during conflicts. Meta’s recent move to pass digital tax costs onto advertisers in Europe is also notable.
