Equinix is set to develop a substantial datacenter hub near London’s M25, with an allocation of £3.9 billion for the 85-acre Hertfordshire site. This initiative, spearheaded by DC01 UK Ltd, will establish three state-of-the-art facilities supplied with more than 250 MW of capacity, spanning two million square feet. The site is anticipated to become operational by 2030, aligning with the expected grid connection. The project promises to generate approximately 2,500 construction roles and sustain 200 full-time positions. Despite criticism regarding short-term local job benefits, consultants at KPMG estimate the project’s economic contribution could reach £3 billion during construction and £260 million annually thereafter. A focus on eco-conscious operations will see facilities powered by renewable energy and implementing dry cooling to align water usage with that of office buildings. Industry voices, including the UK’s Science, Innovation, and Technology Secretary, deem the investment a crucial step towards advancing the nation’s AI-driven initiatives.
