This week, we’re diving into a tale from “Frank,” who shares an anecdote from his manager about unusual events at a data center located in a cricket-loving country. The story begins with Frank’s boss working in a meticulously maintained data center devoid of frequent disruptions.

Monotony led a team member to bring in a cricket bat and a softer training ball, initially used in the break room but eventually played in the datacenter aisles due to their resemblance to cricket pitches. This nighttime cricket league became a favorite pastime among the staff.

However, the enthusiasm reached a point where they lost track of time and were caught by the next shift arriving early to join the game. The supervisor did not report them, leading to both teams arriving together for regular matches.

Unfortunately, one late-night match resulted in a forceful ball breaking an emergency alarm, causing management to rush in to find not a disaster but two shifts of employees in harmony. They ingeniously masked the incident as a joint training exercise, avoiding any ramifications. Despite agreeing to halt the games, the story of cricket matches in a data center lived long in tech folklore.

Have you got a quirky data center tale? We’d love to hear it for a future edition of “Who, Me?”
