India is reportedly in initial discussions with Nvidia to co-create AI-focused silicon, according to local sources. Minister for electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, indicated that conversations are underway regarding AI chip development. Although the precise nature of the potential collaboration is yet to be defined, India aims to expand its semiconductor landscape while leveraging its strong base in chip design expertise.

The country’s ‘AI mission’ highlights AI infrastructure growth, as shown by recent plans to construct a 10,000-GPU supercomputer. Modified funding guidelines now encourage smaller tech providers to offer GPU-based services by easing the financial burdens associated with bulk purchases.

While India is determined to harness AI for public service enhancements, its domestic chip production is not yet poised to support certain advanced technologies, with existing manufacturing setups lagging behind the capabilities required for Nvidia’s sophisticated chips. Hence, a design collaboration seems plausible. Should Nvidia and India finalize their plans, they could potentially adapt AI solutions for regional applications, such as optimizing railway security systems.

Further insights may emerge following a session featuring Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang at an upcoming Mumbai event.
