Senior technology leaders are increasingly concerned about the swift adoption of AI as pressures to deploy clash with risk management and compliance needs. A new Global CIO Report from Logicalis highlights that organizations worldwide are accelerating AI investments beyond their capacity to manage these technologies, revealing a disconnect between ambitions and the skills or governance necessary to achieve them effectively. A survey involving 1,000 global tech leaders indicates that while innovation is a primary driver of AI adoption, more than half (51 percent) feel the integration is advancing too hastily. Furthermore, less than half confirm their AI strategies align with broader business goals or key performance measures.
This quick adoption of AI, Logicalis claims, often proceeds without mature frameworks for evaluating value, allocating resources, or establishing success metrics. CIOs report that, while accountable for tech deployments, they lack adequate guidance on best practices for effective AI execution, with only 36 percent expressing confidence in their approach.
Amidst a focus on AI projects, businesses risk sidelining other priorities, echoing past warnings from IBM regarding infrastructure management for generative AI. Despite increased responsibility for sustainability, only a minority actively assess the environmental impact of AI, and a mere 41 percent prioritize energy efficiency in AI solutions, despite projections of rising data center energy demands.
While AI shows promise in areas with established data and processes, like predictive analytics, scaling these initiatives from pilot stages to full deployment poses significant confidence challenges for nearly two-thirds of CIOs. Historical reports suggest a skills gap, rather than funding, as a primary barrier to wider AI adoption, impacting almost 90 percent of organizations.
Despite concerns over market maturity and stability, a substantial 72 percent of enterprises intend further AI investments, with 60 percent focusing on the growing interest in agentic AI. Concerns about an ‘AI bubble’ persist, with many firms lacking contingency plans for service provider vulnerabilities. Logicalis concludes that AI’s permanency in the tech landscape hinges on its effective governance and management.
