In a strategic move, OpenAI has enlisted South Korea’s premier chipmakers Samsung and SK Hynix to bolster its ambitious AI infrastructure project. The companies will contribute to OpenAI’s Stargate initiative by providing substantial quantities of advanced memory chips and collaborating on AI datacenter developments in South Korea. Announced jointly with Seoul officials, this collaboration emphasizes Korea’s emerging role in global AI infrastructure. Under the agreement, Samsung and SK Hynix will produce around 900,000 DRAM wafer starts monthly, a capacity only achievable with the world’s largest fabrication plants. Moreover, SK Hynix is also engaged in exploring new AI datacenter opportunities with local partners, while Samsung’s IT branch, Samsung SDS, is set to promote ChatGPT Enterprise to regional businesses. This partnership not only advances Korea’s position in AI but also ensures a diversified supplier base for OpenAI, reducing the risks associated with potential supply chain disruptions. Following the news, Samsung’s stock reached its highest level since 2021, with SK Hynix shares experiencing a significant surge as well.
