Albania’s Prime Minister is considering an unprecedented move: appointing an AI system as a minister. At a recent party conference, Prime Minister Edi Rama introduced his new cabinet lineup, including a revolutionary move to promote ‘Djella’, the digital assistant formerly used to help citizens with government services. Initially launched in 2024, Djella has evolved to become an intelligent avatar, enabling real-time interactions and facilitating requests through conversational language. The AI, now running its third version, could soon oversee public procurement, aiming for a future where all public tenders are conducted by an incorruptible AI system. Operating on Microsoft’s Azure and enhanced by advanced AI models, Djella is expected to accelerate government efficiency significantly. However, appointing an AI minister requires constitutional approval and the nod of Albania’s President, Bajram Begaj. Rama expresses confidence in Djella’s capabilities, foreseeing the AI’s role in transforming public service administration in Albania.
