Samsung Electronics has announced a major reshuffle in its leadership in response to the burgeoning AI market. While competitors like Nvidia have seen dramatic increases in revenue, Samsung has struggled, culminating in a significant leadership overhaul. The company has appointed Young Hyun Jun as the new CEO of its Memory Business, while Jinman Han steps up as the head of the Foundry Business. This strategic move aims to bolster Samsung’s presence in the AI sector, particularly in high-bandwidth memory (HBM) production.
Young Hyun Jun assumes his role with a strong background from his previous post as vice chair and head of the Device Solutions Division. The company is targeting the growing demand for HBM as AI developments surge.
Meanwhile, Jinman Han’s extensive experience in memory and flash design gears him well for his new role, with a focus on enhancing Samsung’s competitive edge against leaders like TSMC.
In addition to these appointments, Samsung has also established a Future Business Division, tasked to innovate and expand Samsung’s tech horizon under Hansung Ko’s leadership.
The revamped leadership team faces the formidable task of accelerating Samsung’s HBM4 development efforts, crucial for supporting Nvidia’s forthcoming Rubin GPU technology. Additionally, enhancing the quality and competitiveness of Samsung’s foundry operations remains a priority, aiming to reduce dependency on external suppliers and capture a greater market share in semiconductor manufacturing.
