ADDING UP TO 15MW CAPACITY

Africa Data Centers, a business of Cassava Technologies, has just announced its plan to expand its Sameer data center facility in Nairobi, Kenya, adding up to 15MW of IT capacity.

 The Sameer facility expansion is to be carried out on a recently acquired piece of land adjacent to the company’s existing data center in Nairobi, Kenya and is planned to be completed in the first half of 2024 with the expectation of bringing five times more than the current capacity of the facility.

 “Colocation has become the foundation of African digital transformation and will be for the foreseeable future. Our investment into expanding our data center operations in Kenya is in line with the increasing demand that we are experiencing due to the significant increase in the adoption of digital services in the East African region,” said Hardy Pemhiwa, Group President & CEO of Cassava Technologies.

As announced, the new data center will begin with 5MW of IT load and will be built in the company’s edge modular design, which is to allow their clients grow and scale depending on their requirements.

“This is very reassuring for customers, as it brings a lot of synergies by enabling them to operate multiple deployments across Africa Data Centers sites with a single operations team and a campus and infrastructure, they are familiar with,” said Tesh Durvasula, CEO of Africa Data Centers.

According to Africa Data Centers, this announcement is a step forward in its expansion plans announced in 2021, which include the investment of $500m, fixated on building hyperscale data centers across Africa.

In view of Africa Data Centers’ expansion plans, the company recently announced its plan to build its first data center in Kigali, Rwanda – a 2MW data center facility, that is planned to break ground in the first quarter of 2023. The new data center is to be connected to their new data center site in Nairobi.
