POWERED BY 100% GREEN ENERGY

Microsoft Corp. has announced the opening of its newest cloud data center region in Sweden, with presence in Gävle, Sandviken and Staffanstorp, enabling businesses with Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365 to run their workloads and store data within the country.

The new Sweden cloud region will also deliver Azure Availability Zones, providing customers with access to separate data centers to support more resiliency preferences. While Microsoft 365 is immediately available at the facility, the company announced that its Dynamics 365 and Power Platform will be available within a year.

“As Swedish industries and enterprises look to adopt and innovate on Microsoft’s platform, our datacenter investments build on our portfolio of products and services while meeting important data residency, security and compliance needs,” said Brad Smith, President of Microsoft.

“Our Swedish datacenters are among the most sustainably designed and operated in the world. This is an important launch for Sweden and Europe, as I am of the firm conviction that new tech innovation is the most important enabler for the world to reach the global sustainability targets. By moving to the cloud, we create new opportunities to accelerate the transformation to a more sustainable future – together,” said Hélène Barnekow, general manager of Microsoft Sweden.

Through this facility, Microsoft further showcases its commitment to cutting carbon emissions, achieving zero waste certification, and running on 100% carbon-free energy. In line with this, Microsoft’s Sweden datacenter region will be powered by 100% carbon-free energy with the support of its partner Vattenfall. As announced, Microsoft has also signed agreements for new renewable energy projects with bp, Enlight Renewable Energy, European Energy, NTR, Prime Capital and wpd to support the operations of the cloud region.

The development of this datacenter region was first announced in 2019, where Microsoft disclosed its plan to partner with Swedish utility provider Vattenfall with support from its Node Pole team, on the sourcing and supply of 100% renewable energy as required by the cloud facilities.
