ENABLING MORE TOWER BASE DATA CENTERS

Data center colocation, cloud and connectivity provider Flexential, has just announced the launch of its new Edge solution through partnership with American Tower, a wireless communications tower infrastructure provider.

The new Flexential Local Edge solution involves setting up remote data centers which will provide colocation services to data consumers at lower latency, also granting customers access to the company’s cloud service portfolio, including cloud computing, Storage-as-a-Service, Disaster-Recovery-as-a-Service, and Backup-as-a-Service via Flexential’s core-to-edge connectivity platform FlexAnywhere™.

“By combining our strengths with these partners, we can leverage the FlexAnywhere network to offer our customers the means to drive edge computing even further than it has been – not just to the metro area but also to the street level,” said Chris Downie, Chief Executive Officer of Flexential.

“This is an exciting advancement lowering latency to our customers in various industries, including transportation, logistics, finance, gaming and healthcare, supporting a variety of IoT, video, AI, and other real-time dynamic applications. Local Edge will push to use 5G and AI in a more meaningful way for traffic controls, autonomous vehicles, infrastructure monitoring and more. We see this [as] an opportunity in many markets around the country to provide a true differentiator.”

Through this partnership, the first Flexential Local Edge will make use of American Tower’s Edge data center located at the base of its tower facility in Atlanta, which is connected with Colo Atl, an edge data center subsidiary of American Tower that offers carrier-neutral colocation and interconnection services at 55 Marietta Street in Atlanta. This facility was launched by Colo Atl in July with a capacity of 100KW and a floor area of 360 square feet.

As announced, Atlanta is one of three locations where Flexential will be using American Tower Edge Data Center infrastructure, with plans to expand in Denver and Boulder, Colorado. This expansion appears to be aimed at the two American Tower facilities that were launched about a week ago.
