A $51M THIRD PHASE EXPANSION

Data center and connectivity giant Equinix Inc., has announced the completion of the third phase expansion of HK4, one of its five data centers in Hong Kong.

As announced by Equinix, the new expansion of HK4 cost the company about US$51 million (approximately HK$364 million).  Located in Sha Tin, HK4 expansion is expected to complement Equinix facilities in Tseun Wan and Tseung Kwan O. This further brings Equinix’s total colocation space in Hong Kong to about 34,500 square meters.

“The current pandemic has clearly accelerated the pace of digital transformation for businesses of all kinds. With more and more companies embracing digital transformation, we have seen demand for interconnection continue to grow. This is a trend that we expect to become more predominant with the rollout of 5G already started in the city,” said Larry Tam, Managing Director, Equinix Hong Kong.

“With our continued investment in growing our interconnected platform and robust ecosystems both locally and globally, we are here to support and speed up the digital growth of our customers.”

HK4 phase three expansion now provides Equinix’s customers with an additional 1,000 cabinets added to the data center, which increases the total capacity to 1,500 cabinets. The company also announced that it will further add 3,000 cabinets in future phases.

Also expanding its footprints in Asia, Equinix announced in April that it has signed a joint venture worth more than $1 billion in cash and assets – with Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC to develop and operate three data centers in Japan.

In March, Equinix opened its fourth data center in Singapore SG4, a converted seven-story building located in Tai Seng Industry Estate, providing up to 45,400 square feet of colocation space which accommodates about 1,400 cabinets. Using SG4, Equinix also established a partnership with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to deploy the TCS Enterprise Cloud Platform (ECP) across the Asia Pacific region.
