LOCATED 85 FT BELOW GROUND IN SPRINGFIELD
Mid-west data center service provider Bluebird Network, has announced a second expansion of its underground data center in Springfield, Missouri.
The expansion project will add more than 11,500 square feet (1,000 square meters) of floor space to the data center, bringing the total size of the facility’s white space to 29,000 square feet (2,700 square meters).
Located 85 feet below ground level in an old limestone mine, the data center will also have its on-site generating capabilities increased to 6MW with the installation of a third primary metered electrical grid connection, dual lithium-ion-based uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system, and the implementation of a Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) system to monitor operations.
“Bluebird Network is proud to provide this additional data center space and capacity, perfectly aligned with the business and hosting community,” said Michael Morey, CEO of Bluebird Network.
“This data center was purposefully built for the convenience of business communities in the region. And we are closer than you think to Kansas City, Joplin, Columbia, Northwest Arkansas, and Tulsa.”
According to the company, this expansion will establish the site as a Tier III facility, and allow Bluebird to adapt to industry advancements in cloud computing, the hosting environment, artificial intelligence, and blockchain capabilities.
In September, Bluebird Network announced that Macquarie Infrastructure Partners (MIP) has completed its acquisition of the company. While maintaining its personalized level of service, the transaction provides Bluebird an immediate 2,500 fiber route mile expansion into Illinois, including the cities of Rockford, Peoria, Bloomington, Normal and the Quad Cities area.
“We are pleased to expand Macquarie Infrastructure Partners’ communications infrastructure portfolio with the acquisition of Bluebird,” said Karl Kuchel, CEO of MIP. “We look forward to working with Bluebird’s experienced management team to grow the company’s network and services in the years ahead.”
As announced, the expansion of the Springfield underground facility is expected to be completed in mid-2020.
